My favourite holiday decorations and crafts are those that incorporate natural evergreen foliage! These DIY wreaths are easy to make, make your house smell amazing, and are a fraction of the cost compared to those you would buy at the grocery store or a florist. Grab a friend + your favourite holiday drink + enjoy an evening of festivities!
Supplies:
- Evergreen foliage. We used spruce, cedar,+ pine. Whatever you can forage works!
- Eucalyptus. We used silver dollar + willow varieties.
- Wire wreath ring. Found at Michaels.
- Kitchen scissors
- Optional: foraged holly, pinecones, berries, etc.
Begin with your wreath ring and foraged evergreens.
Begin inserting the pieces of evergreen through the ring, weaving the pieces between each other to anchor them.
Tuck + weave the pieces that fan out (see left) into the wreath ring. Repeat until you can no longer see the ring and the wreath looks full + even.
Make sure your greens are all inserted at the same angle, so the foliage is all facing either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
I started with cedar as it is more flat, and then began to layer on the pine + spruce. I finished with the eucalyptus + my friend with pinecones.
Wreaths are a natural, budget-friendly, and festive way to bring nature into your home this holiday season! The only thing we had to buy for this craft was the wreath rings, which were about $4 each. They can be re-used for new wreaths when the foliage has over-dried and become hard/dead. The fresh-made wreaths should last for about 6-12 months.
Eucalyptus can be purchased at most florists, but I am lucky enough to have a large mature tree in my neighbourhood. The evergreens can be foraged from nearby forests and parks. Of course, try to forage what has already fallen. This is easy after a large winter storm! You might even happen to have a neighbour who has cut back some of their evergreens lately!
Depending on the style you are going for, incorporating holly, berries, pinecones, and twigs is an easy way to add more colour and depth to your wreath.
